East–West: Languages, Cultures, Societies

2017 / Volume 3 / Issue 1

The question of the relationship between East and West is one of the most fraught questions in contemporary times. It interweaves specific historical, social and cultural aspects into a complex tangle. As difficult as it may be to solve this question, there is hardly any alternative for reaching resolution besides taking up the path towards mutual understanding. The present volume contains articles from various disciplines that speak to this question and examine language, culture and society. The emphasis is nevertheless placed on issues concerning language, insofar as Professor Penka Samsareva, whom this volume is dedicated to, is a specialist in Arabic linguistics and is one of the doyennes of the Bulgarian school of Arabic studies.

Editor-in-Chief: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Galina Rausseva-Sokolova. Volume editors: Victor Todorov. The editors were assisted by Pavel Pavlovitch, Zhana Zhelyazkova, Gergana Ruseva, and Angela Rodel.

On the cover: A page from Al-Kitab by Sibaweyhi, the "father" of Arabic Grammar.

The preparation and electronic publication of the volume was carried out within Project No. 80-10-182, financed on a competitive basis from the state budget of the Republic of Bulgaria designated for scientific research at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski.
